Healthy Takeaway Options
Sometimes it’s just nice to have a quick meal out, it’s nice to have someone else cook for you and nice to have it super quick especially when you are really hungry! There is this misconception that takeaways are all bad for you so I thought I would put together a post on some healthier takeaway options.
If you are from one of the big cities then you definitely have more options but that should not be an excuse for those of you in smaller centres like Wanganui as many of these options are available to you and if they are not then you can always go for one of my favourites – a rotisserie chicken and salad from the supermarket, quick, easy and healthier than a burger and fries!
Turkish
A chicken salad from the Turkish place can be a relatively healthy and easy lunch or dinner option. Load up on the salads and go easy on the dressings.
Pita Pit
I have noticed that pita pit have been popping up all around the place which is great. Don’t go overboard on the cheese and sauces and stick to wholemeal bread and you’re on to a winner. They also have a pretty good range of salad options as well.
Sushi
Sushi is very common these days which is awesome. It is a great healthy option (so long as your body can digest grains), steer clear of the deep fried options and choose options with a selection of protein and fats as well as vegetables. Salmon and avocado or cream cheese are near the top of my list.
Burger Burger / Burger Fuel
I bet you never saw a burger place coming up on this list of healthy takeaway options! While a burger and fries isn’t an ideal option both Burger Burger and Burger Fuel have low-carb options which are essentially their burgers without buns (using lettuce as the bun). The meat they use is just meat with no fillers like patties in other burgers. Burger fuel also does chicken tenders which are just chicken with herbs and spices and Burger Burger does a charred broccoli side which I have seen raved about on a number of occasions!
Nandos
Leave the fries alone and stick with one of their delicious chickens and salads, you can even get a delicious corn on the cobb as a side. You can choose the heat of your chicken or stick with lemon and herb.
Subway
I don’t think a healthy takeaway option list would be complete without at least mentioning subway. While I think the other options are generally better you can get a delicious salad or sub (just think whether you really need a foot long or not, and step away from the cookies), in a matter of moments. Choose wholemeal bread for bonus points, they also do a selection of wrap
Tank
Tank is a newbie for me, while I’m not a huge fan of drinking my calories it is a great way of getting extra fruit and vegetables into you when you are out and about. Tank also does a range of salads, as with all salads be careful with the amount of sauce and cheese and load up on vegetables and protein.
Mexican
I love Mexican, the only downside is that portions are generally massive! If you get Mexican opt for one of their salads, be careful with the sauces. Add avocado for some good fats to help keep you full and skip the salad with the taco bowl unless you need the additional calories that day. Generally the salads are big enough that you don’t need the taco too. Mexicali does a great mango chicken salad which is nice and filling. Oh and hold the margarita except for special occasions 😉
While there are more than just these options available if you are after a healthy takeaway option these are some of the best options out there for quick and easy healthy takeaways.
I’d love to know what your favourite healthy takeaway is….
