Often when we go on holiday our health and fitness goes out the window, we have done all the hard work on the lead up to the holiday and now is our time to let loose, drink the cocktails and not worry about a thing.
It doesn’t need to be a chore to fit exercise in while travelling, all you need to do is choose some fun activities and make slight changes to how you approach your trip. As this post goes live we are up in the air on our way to Hawaii, so what better time than to give you all some tips on how to fit exercise in while travelling.
// Do a quick Hotel Workout
Workouts don’t need to be long to be effective. Either in the morning before you head out for your day’s adventures or when you get back (before you turn the t.v on in your hotel room), do a quick 15-20 minute workout in your hotel room. There are tonnes of bodyweight only exercises you can do (squats, pressups, lunges, burpees, getups, squat thrusts etc) so there are no excuses.
// Walking Tour
See if you can find a walking tour for the cities you are going too, these are often either free (paying a donation to the hosts), or reasonably priced. I have found the walking tours I have done before have been at a nice and relaxed pace but it gets you out and about and you get to learn a lot about the city you are in.
// Try a new activity
Try something new on your trip. If you are going to a nice tropical island why don’t you think about learning to surf or giving stand up paddle boarding a go. If water sports aren’t your thing why not try something like zip lining. You will get some great stories, fit in a bit of exercise and who knows you might end up loving the new activity and want to take it up when you get back home.
// Walk one way
If you are heading out to dinner consider walking one way. It’s always nice to go for a little stroll after dinner, it helps let your food settle and seeing the city by lights is always something special, especially when you are on holiday. Even better if the city you are in has a nice little waterfront area to go for a stroll in.
// Take an earlier stop
Get off public transport one stop before you need to, or one stop after your destination and then walk the rest of the way. You will get to see the real city, and the sights the people who live there everyday see. Often there are a number of tourist sites around the same place so you can also walk in between them which will give you a little bit of extra exercise and you don’t really notice it because you are soaking in the sites.
// Climb a high point
Look for the highest point in the city you are in and climb it. It may sound silly but there are often great views at the highest point in the city. In Phuket I decided to just walk for an hour or so up the side of a hill, it was really hot so I stopped along the way for an iced tea at a little bar and at the top I was greeted with a spectacular view out over the sea! If you’re not keen on climbing up the hill, take public transport up and walk back down to make it easier.
